{"id":7691,"date":"2024-08-28T14:16:54","date_gmt":"2024-08-28T14:16:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/help.insperity.com\/hcm\/?post_type=ht_kb&#038;p=7691"},"modified":"2025-12-09T18:52:58","modified_gmt":"2025-12-09T18:52:58","slug":"location-accuracy-for-punch-geolocation-and-geofencing","status":"publish","type":"ht_kb","link":"https:\/\/help.insperity.com\/hcm\/knowledge-base\/location-accuracy-for-punch-geolocation-and-geofencing\/","title":{"rendered":"Location accuracy for punch geolocation and geofencing"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>(updated 12\/09\/2025)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-6a9938b57715602830783843f0404268\" style=\"color:#009639\"><strong>Geolocation tracking and geofencing only work reliably when the device you&#8217;re using to punch is connected to the internet and can accurately capture its own physical location<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The Insperity <strong>HR<\/strong>Core\u2122 solution includes Time and Labor Management features for accurate time collection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Geolocation&nbsp;<\/strong>tracking captures the employee\u2019s location when they punch in the Adaptive Employee Experience (AEE) and\/or via the Mobile App.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Geofencing<\/strong> allows administrators to define geographical boundaries that restrict where employees can punch or trigger alerts if they&#8217;re punching outside the defined fence areas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-3f45f3b4b1e2ed3661e329530ffac1ee\" style=\"color:#004c97\">What are the best devices for geolocation and geofencing?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The best devices for punch location tracking are mobile smartphones or tablets with built-in GPS hardware that access the internet via cellular towers or satellites.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These common scenarios will prevent devices from accurately capturing punch locations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mobile devices with wifi access but without any reception to cell towers or satellites.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>PCs, such as desktops or laptops, on a company wifi network.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Any device connected to the internet through a VPN.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Without access to cell towers or satellites, the location of the device can be by impacted by VPNs or the location of the wifi access points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-9c4229be98adbb997e8d96b219004a89\" style=\"color:#004c97\">What can impact my device&#8217;s location accuracy?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-a9f574b09c516105661ec3a309d4b75e\" style=\"color:#009639\">VPNs<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Many companies use Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) for security reasons, but they affect how a device&#8217;s location is reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, an employee living in Wisconsin works remotely from home. Their company network policy requires them to connect to the corporate network through a VPN for security. That VPN routes the employee&#8217;s internet traffic through servers in Texas. In this scenario, the employee&#8217;s laptop on the company VPN will appear to be located in Texas, even though the device is actually in Wisconsin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-788a183cd108384508e5281e909bb947\" style=\"color:#009639\">Location Settings<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether your device is a computer laptop or desktop, or a mobile device like a phone or tablet, there are configurable settings that affect location accuracy. Some IT teams may lock these settings on company-managed devices, which can make it harder to capture the right location. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the example below, a company that uses Microsoft Windows devices restricts access to location settings. Location tracking is disabled, so punches from this computer will not reflect where the computer is physically located. If <strong>Require Geolocation<\/strong> is enabled in this employee&#8217;s Time Card Permission rules in Time and Labor Management, they may receive errors attempting to punch from this machine since location services cannot be enabled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Network administrators can update their client access control policies to give specific permission to the isolved People Cloud and Adaptive Employee Experience (AEE) applications to access location-tracking features on company devices. Many resources are available online to help users control their location settings, like this <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/maps\/answer\/2839911?hl=en&amp;co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid\">Find &amp; improve your location\u2019s accuracy in Google Maps<\/a> that provides tips on enabling location accuracy for Android and <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/102647\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Turn Location Services and GPS on or off on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch<\/a> for iOS devices<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Use mobile devices rather than computers.<\/strong><br>While modern laptops and desktop computers have GPS receivers that can report their location, smartphones and tablets have additional inertial sensors like gyroscopes, accelerometers, and barometers to help determine their precise location when GNSS satellite signals are weak or unavailable, so they can more accurately report locations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-31a179d661da29fccbbb35d68c08b517\" style=\"color:#004c97\">Understanding geographical fencing limitations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When geofences are defined in Time and Labor Management, users specify a radius that defines the geographical boundaries for that location. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Since it is a circle, geofences cannot be drawn to match the shape of a specific building. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fences must be large enough to account for inaccuracies when devices report their locations. Geofences should have a minimum radius of at least 350 &#8211; 500 feet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of these geofencing limitations, this feature can&#8217;t be used to require employees to punch in a specific building or area of a warehouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-290ce3ed9c54a4847035d0b0b34995e1\" style=\"color:#0072ce\">Other time collection options<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you need employees to punch in specific buildings or work areas, Insperity recommends these time collection options instead:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Virtual Clocks<\/strong> on computer kiosks or mounted tablets.<br>Virtual Clocks are included in Insperity <strong>HR<\/strong>Core.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hardware time clocks<\/strong>.<br>Insperity offers the NXG series of hardware time clocks for Insperity <strong>HR<\/strong>Core clients.
